An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is a scanning diagnostic tool that is used to diagnose conditions affecting the brain, joints, internal organs, blood vessels, spinal cord, and more. By using strong magnets, radio waves, and a computer, the scan can create highly-detailed 3D cross-sectional images of specific areas of the inside of your body.
During an MRI, you’ll lie down and be put through a tunnel-like machine. The scan can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. While the MRI machine is generally loud, at The Imaging Center, we will offer earplugs or headphones to ensure you can be comfortable throughout the process.
An MRI can look at and help your provider diagnose a wide range of different issues, including stroke, tumors, injuries, infection, and much more. And because it doesn’t use any radiation, it can be done much more often without the worry of complications or the increased risk that comes with regular radiation exposure.
Almost everyone is a good candidate for an MRI. If your doctor or medical provider refers you to have an MRI, you are likely approved to have the scan. The only issue that might stop you is if you have metal implants in your body. Because of the magnet used during the scan, anyone with metal in their body should not have an MRI. But beyond that, if you’re in need of advanced imagery for a diagnosis, an MRI can greatly help you on your health journey.
