Quick Facts

Terminology: Ultrasound (also called sonography)
Approx procedure time: 20–45 minutes, depending on the body area
Scheduling time: Typically available within 1–3 days
Best for: Imaging soft tissues, blood flow, and internal organs; commonly used for pregnancy, abdominal, pelvic, vascular, and thyroid evaluations

Fast, safe, and effective imaging for soft tissue concerns.

Ultrasound is one of the most widely used and trusted methods for examining soft tissues in the body. Whether you’re investigating abdominal pain, checking for vascular conditions, or monitoring a pregnancy, ultrasound provides quick and detailed information without the use of radiation. With advanced image resolution and fast scan capability, we make the process efficient, comfortable, and informative.

Before Your Procedure

Preparing for an ultrasound is generally straightforward, though specific instructions may vary depending on the type of exam you’re having. You’ll receive detailed guidance when scheduling your appointment. In general, wear loose, comfortable clothing; depending on the area being scanned, you may be asked to change into a gown. Be sure to remove any jewelry or accessories near the scan area, as these can interfere with image quality.

Some exams, such as abdominal or pelvic ultrasounds, may require you to fast or drink water beforehand to enhance image clarity. It’s also important to share any relevant symptoms or previous imaging results with our team to help guide your scan and ensure the most accurate results.

During Your Procedure

Ultrasound procedures are quick, non-invasive, and typically painless. During the scan, you’ll lie comfortably on an exam table while a warm, water-based gel is applied to the area being examined. This gel helps the handheld device, called a transducer, glide smoothly over your skin as it captures images using high-frequency sound waves.

The process is generally very comfortable, and our skilled technologists are focused on making sure you feel at ease throughout. At The Imaging Center, we use the GE Logiq E9 scanner, which features an ergonomic design and advanced scan assist technology to deliver high-quality images quickly and efficiently. Most ultrasound exams are completed in just 5 to 15 minutes.

After Your Procedure

There is no downtime required after an ultrasound, so you can return to your routine immediately. Most patients feel completely fine right after the procedure, and no special care is needed unless your provider provides specific instructions. Once your scan is complete, a board-certified radiologist will carefully review the images to give an accurate interpretation. At The Imaging Center, we’re committed to delivering fast turnaround times, typically within 24 hours. Your results will be sent directly to your referring provider to support timely follow-up and care.

Understanding the Risks

Ultrasound is one of the safest imaging procedures available. It uses sound waves rather than radiation and is considered extremely low-risk. However, a few considerations include:

  • Discomfort from pressure
  • Limited by body type
  • Image limitations

Results of Your Procedure

Once your ultrasound is complete, our radiologist will create a detailed report and share it with your referring provider. You’ll also receive a secure notification via text when your results are ready in the patient portal. There, you can view or download your report and share it with your healthcare team as needed.
