What is an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound (also called sonography) is one of the most commonly used screening methods for looking at the soft tissues of the body. While they are most often known for monitoring a pregnancy, ultrasounds also use high-frequency sound waves to produce images of soft tissues, blood flow, and internal organs. And because no radiation is used, they can be done much more frequently. Additionally, because of the advancements in ultrasounds over the years, it’s fast and reliable.

At The Imaging Center, you can usually get in for an ultrasound appointment within 1-3 days.

During the scan, you’ll lie on the exam table, and a gel will be applied to the area being examined. The ultrasound transducer will then be placed on the area and glide over so your provider can see the images. No pain at all.

Who is a Candidate for an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound is appropriate for just about anyone. If your doctor needs to look at your soft tissues, internal organs, blood flow, or pregnancy, you are likely a perfect candidate for an ultrasound. Those with abdominal pains, pregnant people, those with suspected cancer, anyone with breast lumps, and those with an injury can greatly benefit from the results of an ultrasound.

  • Versatile: An ultrasound can be used to examine a variety of concerns. From pregnancy to vascular conditions to pelvic or abdominal concerns to thyroid issues, it can help your provider see what’s going on inside your body and allow you to make an informed decision about your care.
  • Pain-free: As there are no needles or incisions, an ultrasound is completely pain-free. The gel used during the ultrasound may be cold, but besides that, you won’t feel a thing.
  • Non-invasive: Since no incisions are needed, an ultrasound is completely non-invasive. It only involves a handpiece being glided over your skin.
