An ultrasound (also known as a sonography) is an imaging tool that is most often used to look at soft tissues, blood flow, and internal organs. It does this by using high-frequency sound waves to create real-time pictures of your internal soft tissues.
While an ultrasound is most well-known for monitoring a pregnancy, it has so many more uses than that. It’s also used to evaluate the abdominal and pelvic areas, to check on vascular conditions, and to check the thyroid. Additionally, because an ultrasound doesn’t use radiation as an X-ray does, it is much safer and can be done more often.
The ultrasound process is also relatively simple. We will ask you to lie down and place a clear gel on the skin in the area we’re looking at. Your provider will then use an ultrasound wand (called a transducer) and glide it across the skin. Images will then appear on the computer screen for your provider to look at and analyze. The scanner we use at The Imaging Center is the GE Logiq E9. Most ultrasound exams don’t take more than 15 minutes.
Almost everyone is a good candidate for an ultrasound exam. If your medical provider refers you to have an ultrasound, you are approved to have one. Since there is no magnet used and there is no radiation involved, most patients can safely have an ultrasound.
Ultrasounds can be especially effective for those who are struggling with abdominal pain, are pregnant, are dealing with swelling, need to evaluate the health of one or more organs, or have a chronic condition that needs monitoring.
