What is an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound (also known as a sonography) is a very common imaging test that is used to examine the soft tissues in the body. It’s most often used during pregnancy to check on the fetus, but it can also be used to investigate abdominal and pelvic pain, check on vascular conditions, take a look at blood flow, and diagnose certain conditions. And because it doesn’t use any radiation (it uses high-frequency sound waves), it can be a great option for a wide variety of people.

The process is also relatively simple. We’ll have you lie down on the exam table and will put a clear gel on the area we’re looking at. The ultrasound wand (called a transducer) will then be slid over the skin, and the images will show up on a separate computer screen for the technician to examine and analyze. The whole process won’t take longer than 45 minutes.

At The Imaging Center, we use the GE Logiq E9 scanner.

Who is a Candidate for an Ultrasound?

If your doctor has referred you for an ultrasound, you are likely a good candidate for this screening procedure. Because no radiation is used, there are very few people who can’t receive an ultrasound. If you are pregnant, struggling with abdominal or pelvic pain, have vascular issues, have a thyroid condition, or have any other concerns that need to be looked at via an ultrasound, it’s likely a perfect diagnostic tool to help you receive the treatment you need.

Ultrasound Benefits

When you come to The Imaging Center for an ultrasound in Zeeland, you can look forward to a wide range of benefits, including the following:

  • Non-invasive: As there are no needles or probes involved, an ultrasound is completely noninvasive. There is also no recovery, so you can get back to your life immediately.
  • Pain-free: Besides feeling some slight cold from the clear gel applied to your skin, you won’t feel any other discomfort. It’s a completely pain-free procedure.
  • Quick: Most ultrasound sessions don’t take more than 15 minutes, but it can depend on the part of the body we are looking at. Either way, you will be in and out of our office in under an hour.
  • No radiation: Unlike an X-ray and other imaging options, an ultrasound doesn’t use any radiation. It makes it much safer for those who need regular imaging and for anyone who prefers to limit their exposure to radiation.
